Steve Clark (1960-1991)

Stephen Maynard Clark was born on April 23rd, 1960 in Hillsborough, Sheffield, England. He shown an interest in music at an early age, attending his first concert at the age of 6 (Cliff Richard and the Shadows). His father bought him his first guitar at the age of 11, studying classical guitar for a year before being introduced to the music of Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. Upon leaving school he was employed with an engineering firm where he worked as a lathe operator. He was 3/4’s done with his apprenticeship by the time Def Leppard was signed to a record deal with Phonogram Records. Before Def Leppard he played cover songs with his small band Electric Chicken.  In 1978 Clark auditioned for Def Leppard and was accepted as a member of the group, while in the band he was nicknamed “The Riffmaster” because of his talent and ability to come up with some of the best guitar riffs in modern rock. Pete Willis would soon be replaced by Phil Collen in Def Leppard which made them an even greater musical force. Collen and Clark bonded and elevated the dual-guitar sound of Def Leppard.
